SEEDS & GARLIC

Seed Garlic 2012 is in!  Pre-order by email order@naomisorganic.com and pick up at any drop site or come by our booth at People's Co-op Wednesdays 2 - 7pm, Year 'Round Farmer's Market.  All grown on small family farms with organic methods, two of which are transitioning ground to certified organic.

HARDNECK VARIETIES:

Chesnok Red
Flavor:  Retains its terrific garlicky flavor after baking, which makes it especially great in casseroles and mashed potatoes.
Type:  Hardneck, Purple Stripe
Description: Large purple, easy to peel cloves. Originated in Shvelist in the Republic of Georgia. Grown in Corbett, OR

Killarney Red
Flavor:  Deep, full-bodied gourmet flavor!
Type:  Hardneck, Rocambole
Description: Large purple, easy to peel cloves. Excellent sauteeing garlic. Flavor starts out hot and then dissipates quickly for a smooth finish. Grown in Corbett, OR

Music - limited
Flavor:  Very flavorful, slightly spicy, classic garlic flavor that lasts a long time.
Type:  Hardneck, Porcelain
Description:  This cold-hardy mid-season garlic is known for high yields.  White-skinned with a blush of pink, its easy-to-peel cloves are large and fat, with thick, parchment-like wrappers.  Known for its high allicin content. Grown in Corvallis, OR

Naomi’s Red (hardneck) - limited
Flavor:  Garlic lovers, plant me and you’ll be hooked!  Serious, dreamy flavor.
Type:  Hardneck
Description: Grown by Naomi at the little farm in Portland, Oregon, where our shop was located and
in a variety of urban Oregon soils for 4 years.  Seed originally from Tovey’s Farm in upstate New York, 2007.  Thought to be 'Carpathian' variety from the mountains stretching Poland into the Transylvania Alps. Easy to peel.  Big, reliable and very productive! Grown in Portland, OR

Ontario Purple Trillium  (“OPT”)
Flavor: Wow!  It’s been described as a “veritable garlic inferno”, “scorching hot”, and “packs a ferocious punch”.  If you’re a fan of hot garlic, this one’s for you!
Type:  Heirloom Hardneck
Description:  One of the earliest garlics to mature; reliable producer, very sturdy plants, large bulbs.
Grown in Corvallis, OR

Russian Giant - limited
Flavor:  Pleasantly mild; even when roasted or sauteed it doesn’t have the strong aroma or taste usually associated with garlic.
Type:  Hardneck, Porcelain
Description: This large garlic has been described as looking like snow-capped purple mountains. The plants themselves look like small trees, as they can grow up to 5 ft. high.  Each bulb contains 6-8 easy-to-peel cloves.  Six to eight months to maturity. Grown in Corvallis, OR

Siberian HOT
Flavor:  Fiery! Extremely high levels of allicin to help lower cholestrol. Sure
Type:  Hardneck; Purple Stripe
Description: Extra large, easy-to-peel cloves; stores for ~5 months;  thrives in cold weather. Prized for having a very high allicin content--possibly the highest of any garlic.  Allicin supports normal cholesterol levels, boosts the immune system, and enhances circulation.
Grown in Corbett, OR

Siberian MILD - SOLD OUT until 2012
Flavor:  Mild to Medium; “good flavor but not overpowering”.  Sweet when baked.
Type:  Hardneck; Purple Stripe

SOFTNECK VARIETIES:

Naomi’s Softneck - limited
Flavor:   Delicious, rich, full flavor to romance your tastebuds.
Type:  Softneck
Description:
Grown by Naomi at the little farm in Portland, Oregon, where our shop was located and in a variety of urban Oregon soils for 4 years.  Seed originally from Tovey’s Farm in upstate New York, 2007. Great keeper to keep you cozy through the winter and spring! Grown in Portland, OR

Nootka Rose
Flavor:  Strong, rich, flavor more like a hardneck.
Type:  Softneck; Heirloom from Waldron Island, Washington, grown by Adaptive Seeds in Sweet Home, Oregon.  
History/Characteristics:  Rose-colored cloves, lovely for braiding.  Very productive.  Long storage--up to 10 months.  Late-maturing, resists fungus.

Oregon Blue
Flavor:  Nice hot flavor.
Type:  Softneck, 'Artichoke'
Description:  Northwest heirloom variety, high yields, vigorous plants with deep green leaves.  Bulb wrappers have a light blue-purple tint.  Mid-season, Good storage.  Expect 8-10 cloves per bulb. Grown in Corvallis, OR

Polish
Flavor:  Richly flavored, great for lovers of hot garlic!  Maintains impressive heat even when roasted.
Type:  Softneck; Old-world artichoke type
Description: This mid-season garlic variety was introduced into North America around 1900.  Larger than most softnecks, it is one of the most winter-hardy.  Great choice for braiding because of its parchment-like bulb wrappers.  Harvest early in summer, stores into mid-winter.

Silver Rose
Flavor:  Subtle flavor, with a pinch heat, one of the mildest; little after-taste
Type:  Softneck
Description:  Rose-colored cloves in smooth, bright white bulbs--beautiful for braiding.  Late maturing, reported to be resistant to the rust fungus common in the maritime northwest.  One of the longest-storing garlics. Grown in Sweet Home, OR
